12th July, 2014

We awoke to another great sunrise over a beautifully coloured escarpment in Kakadu today at Garnamarr Camground. While we were having breakfast a backpacker come over and asked if we were heading to Twin Falls today. She had seen us in at Jim Jim the day before and spoken to Clare. She asked if we had room for one of her friends as their car couldn't complete the water crossing and so we ended up with young Chris from Switzerland sharing the back seat with the kids. He was a lovely young. An and he regaled us with stories of his travels and volunteer work all over the world and we drove towards Twin Falls. The track in covered the same road as that to Jim Jim Falls fro the first 9 kilometres and then it turned right and headed down to the South Alligator River.

The crossing looked pretty daunting with the early morning light reflecting off the water. The depth markers read .8 metres but we had been told it was at .65, which was closer to the mark. I mounted the GoPro to the bullbar hoping to get some dunking action but it wasn't to be.

After the crossing the road become easier and before we knew it we were at the car park. We went down to the boat shuttle and then the four of us caught the boat up to the walking track and made our way over some racks and boulders to the sandy beach of Twin Falls with its large croc trap and No Swimming signs. What a beautiful place it would have been great when you could actually float/swim up here through this gorge. We took all the photos we could and then made our back to camp and packed up. The walk in was a lot easier than the one to Jim Jim the day before.

Once back in the car we headed for Merl Campground so we could be up on Ubirr for the sunset. We had heard about the mossies here but thought we would risk it to be here for sunset. While we set up it was fine, the odd mossie but nothing the Bushmans 40% Deet couldn't manage to turn away.

Then we drive out at Cahills Crossing looking for some croc action and weren't dissappointed, there was a big one sunning itself on the bank across from us and then others floating in the water, one with what appeared to be a tracker on it.

From there we headed out to Ubirr and looked at some of the rock art before heading up the hill for sunset with hundreds of other travellers. We weren't dissappointed it was another glorious sunset and then just as the sun went down you turned around and were greeted by a full moon rising right behind us.

Now as we were all snapping away with our cameras and phones, this buzzing started to be heard around my ears and then on my head. The bloody mosquitoes were everywhere, as if someone had flicked a switch and they fell from the sky. We hurried back to the car and locked ourselves inside and made our way. Back to camp aware that we had to cook tea outside when we got back, what a thought.

We had 4 mossie heavy duty mossie coils going, 3 citronella candles and Bushmans coated on, along with long clothes in the 28 degree heat and still they were coming at us, it was frightening but we mangled to survive the night. Even in the shower trying to wash the Bushmans off they were still trying to attack. I am typing this on Sunday morning looking out the fly screen window as they sit on the other side waiting for me to go out there so they can resume their ungodly attack.
