Once we had finished there we went up to the centre of town and walked along Bicentennial Park, remembering those that lost their lives during the bombing of Darwin in 1942.
This is the area set aside to commemorate the bombing of the USS Peary.
Then we set off for the World War 2 Oil Tunnels which were built to house the oil required to power the Navy's vessels. Only two of them were actually used in the end and not for the Navy's oil. It was a great memorial to the war time up here in Darwin. The air inside the tunnels does get a bit thin towards the end. They were hand dug at the time and are a great feat of engineering.
After a walk around Darwin CBD, visiting some Cyclone Tracy ruins, we had Subway and McDonalds for lunch and headed over to Cullens Bay to book a Fishing Charter for tomorrow. This is what Trent wanted to spend his birthday money on.
From Cullen Bay we headed across to the Darwin Museum which was very interesting. Trent loved the Cyclone Tracy exhibition and I loved the Birds of Paradise exhibition. The girls loved it all.
From the museum we hit the Mindil Beach Night Markets. They kick off at about 5:00 pm and run until 10 or so. The food stalls are amazing, with foods available from all over the world. The actual market stalls are well, market stalls, but being in the territory it does have a few things related to this area like didgeridoos, aboriginal paintings and art as well as crocodile and barramundi gear.
Trent has been keen on getting a croc tooth necklace. We spotted some cheap lies at a few stalls but I thought he was better off paying a couple of dollars more for an authentic one so headed across to the Croc and Barra Stall. The owner saw us looking at the $20 to $25 teeth and started asking questions. He overheard me telling Trent it was his money and asked a few questions. When he found out it was Trent's Birthday money he was spending he told us it was his birthday yesterday and started looking at the teeth himself. He selected a $40 tooth, pulled it from its packaging and put it around Trent's neck "there you go mate."
How much?"
Thinking he would say a $20 would cover it. "He can have it."
WOW the smile on Trent's face said it all, he couldn't believe his luck and neither could we. The bloke wouldn't take any money from us no matter how much we offered, what a great bloke and a great advertisement for his stall which was full of people.
